Every list of car journey activities eventually recommends something with small parts, and the person writing it has evidently never retrieved plastic from under a car seat at a service station. A glowing peg board travels badly. There are two situations where it still earns its place in the bag.<\/p>\n

Why the car is the worst place for it<\/h2>\n

Pegs need a stable, level surface and a container. A moving car offers neither. Every corner sends loose pegs into the footwell, where they join the crisps and stay until the vehicle is sold. Half a set can vanish on a three-hour drive.<\/p>\n

Packing it properly<\/h2>\n

Templates travel flat in a plastic wallet, pegs travel in a screw-top container rather than a bag, and the board travels wrapped so the grid does not get crushed. A table seat is a genuinely workable surface if the pegs stay in a lidded pot and only a few come out at a time. Even then, take a shallow tray. Without one you will be apologising to the person opposite for the rest of the journey.<\/p>\n

Batteries and airports<\/h2>\n

Take the batteries out for the flight so nothing switches itself on in a case, and carry a spare set because the local shop may not stock the size. If any part uses coin cells, keep them sealed in their packaging and well out of reach of children; swallowing one is a medical emergency.<\/p>\n

    Sharing accommodation with a toddler<\/h2>\n

    Holiday houses are unfamiliar and the usual high shelf does not exist. If there is a child under three in the group, the set stays in a closed case except during controlled table time, because the pegs are small parts and the floor is not yours.<\/p>\n
